State Issues

Unfair Competition Law

Support reform measures that rein in predatory legal practices. Support policies that protect businesses and consumers from unfair business practices.

SB 1188 Employment Compensation, Cashing Paychecks (Flores) (April 2006)

The Chamber opposed SB 1188. This bill would prohibit an employer from issuing paychecks through a bank or place of business that charges a fee to cash the paycheck, unless an employee who cashes the check is reimbursed for the fee charged.

SB 1281 Public Contracts (Romero) (April 2006)

The Chamber opposed SB 1281. This bill would prohibit state agencies from contracting with any business that fails to pay full wages to all workers on jury duty. Contracting is how many small businesses stay alive during their first few years. There is a concern that adding mandated jury duty pay, as a qualification to be a contract bidder will adversely affect a company’s ability for state contract opportunities.

AB 1912 Employment Rights (June 2006)

The Chamber opposed AB 1912, which would prohibit an employer from discharging or refusing to hire an employee or applicant on the basis the employee or applicant legally stores a firearm in his or her vehicle at the worksite, locket up and out of public view. Because a willful violation of the bill’s provision would be a crime, this bill would impose a state mandated local program.
