Council President Blong Xiong Fresno City Council 2600 Fresno Street Fresno, CA 93720 Dear Council President Xiong, I urge your support of an agenda item from the office of Councilmember Jerry Duncan requesting the Council to repeal Fresno Municipal Code Section 4-403, which requires that prevailing wages be paid on City funded projects. This item will appear on the City Council agenda, tomorrow. This is a great opportunity for the City of Fresno to exercise its role as a Charter City and to join other charter cities in California (e.g. Merced, Modesto, Long Beach, Palo Alto) who have taken this action. According to the staff report from Councilmember Duncan, by repealing this Ordinance the City will be able to move forward on critical public safety building projects while saving taxpayer dollars. In fact, there is a potential savings of $100 million on much needed projects. Prevailing wages are not based on an average or even on our local market. They are based on wages paid in large metropolitan areas where the cost of living is much higher than it is in our community. Fresno’s prevailing wage is tied to San Francisco where the cost of living is significantly higher. Repealing this ordinance will generate more jobs, save taxpayers $100 million dollars, and provide an important boost to our economy.
