SB 549 (Corbett)
Employee's right to bereavement leave

Fresno Chamber Position: OPPOSE

SB 549 would unreasonably expand employer’s liability for a new protected bereavement leave for employees.

Under current law, employees are provided protected leave for in a variety of instances.  This new leave requirement applies regardless of business necessity of the employer – if the employee qualifies for the leave, it must be granted.  Increasing the number of circumstances under which an employee is entitled to leave would cause undue hardships for employers.  Employee absences are disruptive and interfere with production, necessitating reassignment of work and causing increased costs.
